Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma & Limb Reconstruction Surgeon
Mr Piers Page is a Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, with an NHS practice at Swansea Bay University Health Board. He graduated from Newcastle University in 2005 and brings extensive experience in major trauma, open fractures, bone infection and limb reconstruction.

Military Career and Training
Mr Page began his surgical training with the British Army, working across Kent, Surrey and Sussex before completing higher surgical training in the same region. He later served on the Complex Trauma service at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, and was subsequently seconded to Swansea Bay University Health Board to support delivery of the MSc in Trauma Sciences.
His military experience underpins a research contribution recognised internationally: he co-authored the landmark paper reporting outcomes of genital injury in service personnel, which has informed clinical guidelines worldwide and been cited in evidence to the US Departments of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs.

The South Wales Major Trauma Network
Mr Page’s consultant appointment supports the South Wales Major Trauma Network, where he is part of a specialist team delivering orthoplastic care for patients with open fractures. Open fractures, most commonly of the lower limb, carry a significantly higher rate of complication than closed fractures. Using the latest surgical techniques, the team focuses on maximising long-term function and quality of life for these patients.
Research
Mr Page holds both MPhil and MD research degrees. He is a regular peer reviewer and published author across several orthopaedic journals. He was the lead author on one of the key papers underpinning the establishment of the orthoplastic service in South Wales, and was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Medal in 2019.
Medicolegal Work
Mr Page is an experienced author of medicolegal reports, with a current focus on complex, severe and life-changing injury. He was awarded the Diploma in Legal Medicine with Distinction by the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine in 2020 and is completing an LLM in Law and Healthcare Ethics at the University of Dundee.
Teaching and Education
Mr Page is committed to surgical education and holds Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He provides small-group tuition for FRCS(Tr & Orth) candidates and writes questions for the British Orthopaedic Association’s UK In-Training Examination (UKITE). He holds the Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education for Surgeons from the University of Dundee and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
