Mr Somasundaram offers the full range of foot and ankle surgical procedures at Sancta Maria Hospital. His forefoot practice covers bunion deformity correction using scarf, basal and MICA osteotomy techniques, first MTPJ fusion for hallux rigidus, lesser toe deformity correction, Morton’s neuroma excision and bunionette correction.

For midfoot conditions he treats Lisfranc fractures and midfoot osteoarthritis, offering both injection and arthrodesis options, as well as rheumatoid foot deformity correction. His hindfoot practice includes subtalar arthroscopy and arthrodesis, TNJ fusion, triple fusion, tibialis posterior tendon surgery, tendoscopy, coalition surgery and fracture fixation of the talus, calcaneum, cuboid and navicular.

His ankle surgery practice covers ankle arthroscopy, ankle fracture fixation and deformity correction, tibial pilon fracture fixation, ankle arthroplasty and arthrodesis, pan-talar fusion and ligament instability surgery.

Fellowships and Training

Mr Somasundaram completed multiple highly competitive fellowships following his consultant appointment: a post-CCT fellowship in hip, foot and ankle and trauma surgery at King’s College Hospital, London; a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at UHSM Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester; the AO Masters Foot and Ankle Fellowship; and honorary fellowships in hand and paediatric surgery at King’s College Hospital, London. Prior to his UK career, he worked as an Assistant Professor in Trauma and Orthopaedics at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences, a postgraduate teaching institution in India.

Qualifications and Background

Mr Somasundaram qualified in Medicine in 1997 from Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University in India and completed his postgraduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2000 at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. He gained his Diplomat of the National Board in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2003, moved to the UK in 2005 and completed his FRCS(Tr & Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2008. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership and Education from Keele University, a Diploma in MSK Ultrasound Skills and a Diploma in Computer Science.

Research and Teaching

Mr Somasundaram has published 10 scientific articles and 21 abstract publications across trauma and orthopaedic surgery subspecialties. He is a clinical supervisor for orthopaedic trainees, physiotherapists and extended scope nurse practitioners, and is a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS).
