Sancta Maria has been part of Swansea's story since 1958.
What began as a six-bed private nursing hospital, founded by two surgeons and a community of dedicated sisters, has grown over more than six decades into one of Wales' leading independent hospitals, and today sits at the heart of HMT's commitment to compassionate, values-led healthcare.
This is that story.
The early years: 1958–1988
1958 — A hospital is born: Surgeons Mr Tanner and Mr Cellan-Jones joined forces with the Ursulines of Jesus Sisters to take over the former Brunswick Nursing Home in Swansea, transforming it into a six-bed private nursing hospital and renaming it Sancta Maria.
1962 — Room to grow: A larger premises was completed, combining Sancta Maria with the neighbouring Mirador. The expansion created a new operating theatre and additional patient rooms, marking the hospital's first major step forward.
1980 — Advancing patient care: The first X-Ray unit was gifted to Sancta Maria, marking a significant milestone that broadened the hospital's diagnostic capabilities and improved care for patients.
1983 — From nursing home to hospital: Reflecting how far Sancta Maria had come in 25 years, the Sancta Maria Nursing Home was officially renamed Sancta Maria Hospital — recognising the breadth of care it had grown to provide beyond its original focus on elderly care.
1985 — A charitable foundation: HMT (Healthcare Management Trust) was registered with The Charity Commission, Rooted in the same values of compassionate, community-focused care that had guided Sancta Maria from the start, HMT provided the foundation for the next phase of growth.
1988 — Continued investment: HMT invested £500,000 in improvements and equipment. The Ursuline Sisters continued to play an active role, remaining on the management committee and working within the hospital, their influence on Sancta Maria's ethos very much alive.
A new chapter: 2019 onwards
2019 — Building the future: Construction began on a brand-new, state-of-the-art HMT Sancta Maria Hospital and advanced diagnostics unit in Swansea's SA1 waterfront district, the most ambitious project in the hospital's history.
2021 — Opening day: On 15th February 2021, the new purpose-built HMT Sancta Maria Hospital opened its doors. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed with patient comfort and safety at its heart, the facility represents everything Sancta Maria has worked toward since that first six-bed nursing home more than sixty years before.
