Mr Rhys Clement is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Swansea Bay University Health Board, working within the South Wales Major Trauma Network, serving a population of over two million people.
Swansea Heritage
He is originally from Swansea, where he grew up, and undertook part of his higher surgical training in Wales. He also trained in Edinburgh and completed an internationally recognised limb reconstruction fellowship at the Bristol Limb Reconstruction Unit. He returned to the region to help develop trauma and limb reconstruction services and is highly invested in delivering high-quality care for patients across South Wales.

Clinical Focus
His clinical practice focuses on complex lower limb trauma and its sequelae, including non-union, malunion, bone loss and fracture-related infection. He has extensive experience in advanced reconstructive techniques such as circular external fixation (Ilizarov and hexapod frames), limb lengthening and deformity correction, and works closely with plastic surgery colleagues as part of a combined orthoplastic service.
Fracture or Surgical Support
In private practice, Mr Clement specialises in the assessment and management of patients with ongoing problems following injury or previous treatment, including pain, delayed recovery, non-union, malunion and complications after fracture or surgery. His approach focuses on careful diagnosis, clear explanation and developing a realistic, evidence-based plan to help patients move forward.
Orthoplastic Trauma Service
Mr Clement has played a key role in establishing and developing the orthoplastic trauma service and regional limb reconstruction pathways in South Wales, and previously served as Clinical Lead for Trauma. His work frequently involves managing complex cases such as infected non-unions, segmental bone loss and limb salvage in high-energy injuries.
Enhanced Research
He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh focused on cartilage injury in septic arthritis, alongside a first-class BMedSci examining biofilm-related infection. His research interests include musculoskeletal infection, bone healing and outcomes following complex trauma, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and international presentations.
Medico-Legal Work
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Clement undertakes medico-legal work in personal injury and complex orthopaedic trauma, providing independent, evidence-based opinions in accordance with his duties as an expert witness. He can be instructed through clerks@Pathwaychambers.com
