Mr Andrew Langston is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty, revision surgery and sports injuries of the hip and knee. He has been a consultant since 2006 and brings extensive experience in both primary and complex revision joint replacement surgery.

Specialist Interests

Mr Langston’s specialist practice centres on hip and knee arthroplasty using cemented and uncemented implants, revision surgery for failed hip and knee replacements, and the treatment of all hip and knee conditions including sports injuries. He also has a broader general orthopaedic interest encompassing knee arthroscopy, lower limb surgery, bunion surgery, carpal tunnel decompression and general trauma.

Fellowship Training

Following completion of his FRCS(Tr & Orth) in 2004, Mr Langston undertook fellowship training at Flinders Medical Centre and Adelaide Repatriation Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia, gaining extensive experience in arthroplasty and lower limb reconstruction before returning to Wales to take up his consultant post in 2006.

Research and Publications

Mr Langston has published peer-reviewed research in the Journal of Accident and Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Injury, with work covering posterior hip dislocation in adolescent rugby players and the masking of compartment syndrome by patient-controlled analgesia following tibial nailing. He has also presented research at national and international orthopaedic meetings including the Welsh Orthopaedic Registrars Day and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Teaching and National Roles

Mr Langston is a Clinical Supervisor for Specialist Registrars in Trauma and Orthopaedics and is regularly involved in teaching medical students from Swansea and Cardiff Universities. He is an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University and a member of the All Wales Training Committee in Orthopaedics.

Training and Background

Mr Langston qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1995, having completed an intercalated BSc in Pharmacology with First Class Honours at Cardiff University in 1994. He gained his MRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1999 and his FRCS(Tr & Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004.

Mr Langston’s NHS practice is at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, based at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot Hospital.
