Mr Mark Davies is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, where he holds Thursday clinics and is Medical Advisor to HMT Healthcare Management Trust. He is an Associate Professor at Swansea University Graduate Entry Medicine, Associate Medical Director for Surgery at Swansea Bay University Health Board, and a Member of the Court of Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr Davies emphasises his core belief that people often delay seeking help for colorectal symptoms out of embarrassment — and that this delay is unnecessary. He encourages anyone with rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, or unexplained discomfort to seek a timely opinion rather than wait.

Specialist Interests

  • Colorectal cancer diagnosis and surgery
  • Colonoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • Haemorrhoid treatment including THD (Transanal Haemorrhoidal Dearterialisation)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • Diverticular disease
  • Faecal incontinence
  • Complex pelvic surgery
  • Hernia surgery

Conditions Treated and Procedures Offered at Sancta Maria Hospital

Mr Davies offers private consultations and surgical treatment across the full range of colorectal and general surgical conditions at Sancta Maria Hospital, including colorectal cancer surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, haemorrhoid treatment (including THD and haemorrhoidectomy), surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, anal fissure, anal fistula and pilonidal disease. He also performs hernia surgery (inguinal, femoral, umbilical and incisional) and manages general surgical conditions including gallstone disease.

Haemorrhoid Treatment

Mr Davies is experienced across the full range of haemorrhoid treatments from outpatient procedures through to surgery, and introduced Doppler-guided haemorrhoidectomy (THD) to the local area. In his patient-facing videos he is direct about the fact that haemorrhoids are extremely common, that most bowel symptoms are not cancer, and that straightforward treatment is available for patients who seek timely advice.

Colonoscopy

Mr Davies performs both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy at Sancta Maria Hospital. He is clear with patients that colonoscopy is the gold standard investigation for bowel symptoms and that the procedure, while not the most comfortable, is very well tolerated and far preferable to leaving symptoms uninvestigated.

Training and Appointments

Mr Davies qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1995 and was awarded a Master of Surgery by the University of London for his thesis into the development and progression of colorectal cancer. He completed surgical training in London, Cardiff and Swansea before undertaking a prestigious fellowship in complex pelvic surgery at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, one of the UK’s foremost oncology centres. He was appointed Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon in Swansea in 2007.

Research, Publications and Academic Roles

Mr Davies has an active research interest in colorectal cancer and has published numerous papers in general and colorectal surgery. He is a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease and the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons, and is an Associate Professor at Swansea University Graduate Entry Medicine School.
