Mr Amir Kambal is a Consultant Upper GI, Laparoscopic and Pancreaticobiliary Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea. He specialises in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for a wide range of general and upper gastrointestinal conditions, offering patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery including quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay and reduced risk of infection.
Mr Kambal is the Wales representative for the British Association of Cancer Surgeons (BASO) and is the designated referral surgeon for pancreaticobiliary cancer and complex gallbladder disease for hospitals across Wales. He has been honoured with the Swansea Bay University Health Board Patient Choice Award in 2015, 2018 and 2024, voted for by his own patients.

His specialist surgical expertise in this field, combined with his advanced laparoscopic skills, means patients can access the highest level of care for these conditions privately at Sancta Maria Hospital.
Training and Qualifications
Mr Kambal qualified in Medicine and completed initial training before moving to Ireland and then Wales. He undertook fellowship-level training at Northwick Park Hospital, Imperial College Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London. He holds a Master of Science and Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) in Surgical Sciences from the University of London, and a Master of Surgical Education (MSEd) from Imperial College London. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School.
Teaching and National Roles
Mr Kambal is a faculty member of the Royal College of Surgeons, teaching laparoscopic surgery to junior surgeons. He is the Wales representative for the British Association of Cancer Surgeons (BASO) and is actively involved in postgraduate surgical education at both regional and national level.
