Professor Lavinia Margarit is a Consultant Obstetrician-Gynaecologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, and Gynaecological Cancer Unit Lead at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. She has been an NHS consultant in Wales since 2003 and holds an Honorary Professorship at Swansea University, first awarded in 2018. Professor Margarit offers private consultations and surgical treatment across a comprehensive range of gynaecological conditions at Sancta Maria Hospital. Her surgical practice includes complex laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, covering endometriosis treatment, fibroid resection, ovarian cyst surgery, adhesiolysis and tubal surgery, as well as hysteroscopic procedures including biopsy, polypectomy, Mirena coil insertion and fibroid resection. As a BSCCP-accredited colposcopist, she also diagnoses and treats cervical abnormalities.
Gynaecological Cancer
Professor Margarit is the Gynaecological Cancer Unit Lead at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, with extensive expertise in the early-stage management of gynaecological malignancies. Her research at Swansea University has focused specifically on biomarkers for ovarian and endometrial cancers, contributing to the evidence base for earlier and more accurate cancer detection.
Training and Qualifications
Professor Margarit trained at the University Hospital of Patras, Greece, with an extensive background in General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and holds a PhD focused on diagnostic methods for high-risk obstetric conditions. She completed the Diploma in Fetal Medicine with Professor Kypros Nicolaides at the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London in 2001, one of the world’s foremost centres for fetal medicine. She was awarded an MSc in Gynaecological Endoscopy from the University of Surrey in 2011 and an MD from Swansea University in 2010, focused on female infertility.

Professor Margarit is an active researcher at Swansea University, with published work in leading peer-reviewed journals on biomarkers for infertility, PCOS, and ovarian and endometrial cancers.
