Professor Lavinia Margarit brings over two decades of dedicated medical experience to her role as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Trained at the prestigious University Hospital of Patras in Greece, she has an extensive background in General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Additionally, she holds a PhD focused on diagnostic methods for high-risk obstetric conditions. Her expertise in maternal and foetal medicine was further enhanced by her completion of the Diploma in Fetal Medicine with Professor K. Nicolaides at the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London in 2001.
Since joining NHS Wales in 2003, Professor Margarit has served as a Consultant Obstetrician-Gynaecologist and the Gynaecological Cancer Unit Lead at Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. She has vast expertise in managing early stages of gynaecological malignancies, vulva disease, endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroid management, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause, HRT, contraception, and early fertility care. As a BSCCP accredited colposcopist, she is proficiency in diagnosing and treating cervical abnormalities.
In 2011, Professor Margarit earned a Master of Science Degree in Gynaecological Endoscopy from the University of Surrey. This advanced training allows her to perform complex laparoscopy and hysteroscopy surgeries in her clinical practice.
Beyond her clinical practice, Professor Margarit is an active researcher and academic leader. She obtained an MD from Swansea University in 2010, studying female infertility. She has been instrumental in numerous research initiatives at Swansea University, focusing on reproductive biology and gynaecological oncology. Her work on biomarkers for infertility and PCOS, as well as ovarian and endometrial cancers, has been widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals. Professor Margarit’s commitment to medical education is evident in her role as an Honorary Professor at Swansea University, first awarded to her in 2018, She supervises MSc and PhD students and delivers guest lectures on gynaecological diseases and treatments to Nanomedicine MSc students, significantly enriching their educational experience.
