Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist
Dr Aamer Iqbal is a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, with an NHS practice at Morriston Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health Board. He specialises in all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology, with particular expertise in image-guided intervention and sports injury imaging.
Dr Iqbal is one of the lead radiologists for the South Wales Sarcoma MDT, taking complex referrals from across the region, and is a Bupa Platinum-recognised consultant.

Dr Iqbal performs a range of image-guided diagnostic and interventional procedures, including:
- Image-guided joint injection and aspiration
- Lumbar nerve root block

Training and Appointments
Dr Iqbal studied Medicine at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2010. He completed his radiology training on the Wales Radiology Training Scheme and subsequently undertook a dedicated Musculoskeletal Imaging fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham in 2018, one of the UK’s foremost centres for musculoskeletal imaging. He was appointed Consultant Radiologist at Swansea Bay University Health Board in 2019.
He has also been appointed as a member of the Clinical Imaging Facility at Swansea University, supporting academic and research activity alongside his clinical role.
Research and Publications
Dr Iqbal has published over 37 peer-reviewed research articles, with over 120 academic citations, and has presented his research at national and international conferences, including the British Association of MR Radiographers annual conference. He has contributed chapters to specialist radiology textbooks including Imaging of Joint Prostheses and Imaging the ACL.
His research contributions include a named clinical sign: the posterior lateral femoral contusion sign, known in the academic literature as the Aamer Botchu Sign, which is an ancillary sign of MCL injury. He has also published research on a novel technique to reduce operator radiation dose during CT-guided intervention, reflecting his commitment to patient and practitioner safety.
