Mr Gokul Vignesh KandaSwamy is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea. He holds an honorary consultant contract with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for robotic prostatectomy, and is one of Wales’ foremost specialist surgeons in prostate and bladder cancer.

Mr KandaSwamy holds several significant national and international leadership roles in urology, including President of the International British Urology Society and Chair of the Welsh Urology Society.

Robotic Surgery in Wales

Mr KandaSwamy is at the forefront of robotic urological surgery in Wales. In addition to performing robotic radical prostatectomy, he is actively involved in establishing robotic cystectomy services in Wales, which will be the first programme of its kind in the country. He is Module Lead for the National Bootcamp Robotic Training programme, responsible for training the next generation of robotic surgeons across the UK.

Training and Appointments

Mr KandaSwamy completed his initial surgical and urology training in India, including a formal urology training programme and a junior consultant post, before moving to the UK. He worked in the West Midlands and Leeds before relocating to Wales in 2015 to undertake an oncology fellowship in Cardiff. He was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Swansea Bay University Health Board in 2016.

Mr KandaSwamy is actively involved in surgical education at regional and national level, teaching surgical skills to junior trainees and supporting senior trainees preparing for the FRCS exit examinations. He is an e-tutor at the University of Edinburgh, delivering surgical teaching entirely online as part of a novel digital education programme.
