Research and Innovation

Dr Lowe has been an active contributor to digital innovation in dermatology services at Swansea Bay University Health Board, which has partnered with Patients Know Best (PKB) since 2015 to enable patients to access their health information remotely and manage long-term conditions such as eczema and psoriasis through a patient-initiated follow-up model. Dr Lowe’s work on this programme was recognised internationally when she was invited to present at the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual conference, where she spoke about the team’s adoption of the PKB platform.

She is also a published researcher, with work appearing in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology examining the delivery of virtual paediatric dermatology clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has additionally published in the British Journal of Dermatology on a teledermatology teaching programme for dermatology registrars, using an experiential learning model to build confidence in remote triage and skin lesion reporting.

Her Topol Fellowship project focused on developing a teledermoscopy service using peripheral medical photography hubs in West Wales, where dermatology services had been without consultant cover for six years, with the aim of diverting appropriate skin cancer referrals away from face-to-face clinics through high-quality remote image reporting.
