Dr Alun Evans is a Consultant Dermatologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, with over 20 years of consultant experience. He was previously NHS Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Lead at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, and Neath Port Talbot Hospital. He trained at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, one of the UK’s foremost centres for dermatological training, and completed a fellowship in Dermatological Surgery and Lasers at the same institution.

Training and Background

Dr Evans qualified as a doctor in London in 1994 and trained at some of the UK’s most prestigious teaching hospitals, including Guy’s and St Thomas’, St Mary’s, the Royal London and the Hammersmith. He undertook his dermatology specialty training at St John’s Institute of Dermatology before completing a clinical fellowship in Dermatological Surgery and Lasers, also at the Institute. He gained specialist accreditation with the GMC in 2003 and moved to Wales in 2004 to take up his consultant post, eventually becoming Clinical Lead.

Awards and Innovation

Dr Evans has twice been recognised for service innovation in NHS Wales:

• 2007: Chief Executive’s Award for Innovation, for introducing a GP camera referral scheme across the Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot areas, improving access to dermatological assessment and reducing unnecessary referrals
• 2015: Health Board Team of the Year Award, for devising and leading the Neath Port Talbot Dermatology Screening Clinics project, which substantially reduced waiting lists across the area

Research and Publications

Dr Evans has authored and co-authored 28 peer-reviewed publications in respected medical journals across his career in dermatology.
