Epilepsy
Epilepsy is Prof Sawhney’s primary clinical and research subspecialty. He is an Executive Member of the Welsh Epilepsy Research Network, has served as Chair of the Epilepsy Working Group at ABMU Health Board, and is actively involved in clinical drug trials for epilepsy. He was clinical lead for epilepsy services across Swansea Bay University Health Board for many years.
Medicolegal Practice
Prof Sawhney has over 15 years of medicolegal experience, with expertise covering whiplash, head injury, peripheral neuropathies, epilepsy and general neurological conditions. He prepares 60 to 70 reports a year for claimants, defendants and under joint instruction. He holds a Civil Procedure Rules Certificate from Premier and Premex, and a Certificate in Medical Reporting for Whiplash-Associated Disorders from Capita. He has attended specialist training in expert witness work and medical negligence.
Research and Publications
Prof Sawhney has edited nine books, published 85 peer-reviewed research papers and contributed 22 chapters to books across neurology and epilepsy. He has served as Assistant Editor for World Neurology and Associate Editor for Neurology India. He has been a visiting Professor to various medical institutes internationally and has examined for DM Neurology, MD Medicine and PhD degrees.
Training and Background
Prof Sawhney graduated from CMC Ludhiana, India, and completed his neurology training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, one of India’s foremost postgraduate medical institutions. He was awarded a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship in Neurology and Epilepsy in 1992-93 and undertook advanced training in epilepsy and neurology at the Maudsley Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London. He served as Additional Professor of Neurology at PGIMER before joining Morriston Hospital as Consultant Neurologist in 1998.
