Professor Keir Lewis is a Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, and Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Swansea University. He is the Clinical Respiratory Lead and Director of Research and Development at Hywel Dda University Health Board, and has been an NHS Consultant since 2003. No GP or specialist referral is required to book a private consultation.
Professor Lewis is the only Respiratory specialist in Wales and the only consultant in Hywel Dda to hold the N3 National Clinical Impact Award, the highest national award for clinical excellence. He is also President of the Welsh Thoracic Society and one of only three doctors in Wales to hold the title of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Conditions Treated at Sancta Maria Hospital
Professor Lewis assesses and treats the full range of respiratory conditions at Sancta Maria Hospital, including chronic cough, breathlessness, asthma, COPD, sleep apnoea and snoring, respiratory failure, and occupational lung disease. Patients travel from across South and West Wales, including Bridgend, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Ceredigion, to access his specialist expertise. He is regularly consulted by other specialists for complex respiratory cases.
Research and Advisory Roles
Professor Lewis is Director of Research and Development at Hywel Dda University Health Board and leads research collaborations across the NHS, Welsh and UK clinical research sectors. He has advised the British and European Thoracic Societies, the Welsh Government, NICE and the Health Technology Assessment programme, and is a Chief Investigator on research projects focused on COPD and smoking cessation. He collaborates with university academics, clinicians and industry partners to improve outcomes for people with lung disease. His MD from Cardiff University focused on sleep apnoea.
Teaching and Education
Professor Lewis is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), one of only three doctors in Wales to hold this status. He has received the Teacher of the Year award and the Outstanding Achievement in Teaching award from Swansea University. He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate students at Swansea and Cardiff Universities, has organised the Wales Respiratory Specialist Training Week, and is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. His lectures have been delivered in the USA, Europe, the Middle East and South Korea.

Training and Background
Professor Lewis completed his first degree in Psychology with First Class Honours at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, followed by a double honours MBBS. He completed his junior doctor training and MRCP examinations at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals, before undertaking senior specialist training in respiratory medicine across South Wales and completing his MD in Sleep Apnoea at Cardiff University.
