Dr Esmail graduated in Medicine in 2012 with Honours at Cardiff University. He was also awarded a First-Class degree in Neuroscience. He completed his foundation training in South Wales and core medical training in London with his higher clinical neurology training at Cambridge, Norwich and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He also completed a Masters in Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge in 2018 where he studied the cellular and molecular mechanisms implicated in neurodegeneration.

Dr Esmail is a Consultant Neurologist with clinical expertise in general neurology, headache, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, dementia, epilepsy, peripheral neuropathy, neuromuscular disorders and acute neurological emergencies. He has a sub-specialty interest in headache with NHS experience in running refractory headache clinics. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and he sits on the RCP board for the neurology exit examinations and the specialty question writing group for the MRCP (UK) examinations.
