Prof Mohammed Muhtaseb is a Consultant Corneal, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea. He is one of a very small number of ophthalmologists practising in the UK who hold fellowship training in all three of cornea surgery, cataract surgery and refractive surgery, making his practice unusually comprehensive for a single surgeon. He has been a Consultant in the NHS since 2006 and is a Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Wales, the University of Sulaimani and Hebron University.

His cataract practice covers routine, complex and refractive cataract surgery using the full range of premium intraocular lens options including multifocal, toric and extended depth of focus lenses, piggyback lenses and refractive lens exchange for patients wishing to reduce dependence on glasses. His corneal practice covers corneal transplant surgery, keratoconus management including collagen cross-linking and intracorneal ring segments, and corneal and external eye disease. He also offers neuro-ophthalmological and medical ophthalmological consultations.

Fellowship Training

Prof Muhtaseb completed three separate subspecialty fellowships in cornea surgery, refractive surgery and medical ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology. His refractive surgery training included time in Crete, a centre for modern LASIK technique development, and he also trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital, one of the world’s foremost eye hospitals.

Innovation and Research

Prof Muhtaseb developed a risk stratification system for cataract surgery that has been adopted internationally for surgical planning and improving patient outcomes. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, reviews for prestigious international ophthalmology journals, and presents regularly at major conferences in Europe, Asia, the USA and the Middle East, including invited speaker roles at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Evolving Practice in Ophthalmology Middle East Conference. He compiled two modules for postgraduate students on the MSc in Clinical Optometry at Cardiff University and is a provider of continuing education and training for optometrists.

Training and Background

Prof Muhtaseb graduated with Distinction from St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1995 and completed his ophthalmology training at prestigious London teaching hospitals before moving to South Wales in 2006.
