Professor Mohammed Muhtaseb (FRCOphth) is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the NHS based in South Wales, with special expertise in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He holds full specialist registration with the General Medical Council.

Professor Muhtaseb graduated with Distinction from St George’s Hospital Medical School, the University of London in 1995 and completed his ophthalmology training in London. Having trained in several of London’s prestigious teaching hospitals, he went on to complete three separate sub-specialty training fellowships in each of Cornea Surgery, Refractive Surgery, and Medical Ophthalmology / Neuro-ophthalmology.

In 2004, he developed and published the first peer-reviewed cataract risk stratification system, since adopted internationally for surgical planning.

He moved to South Wales in 2006 to take up his Consultant position and has continuously strived to establish and develop new services for his patients since that time. He is well known as an educator of medical students, ophthalmologists and optometrists. He has compiled modules for the MSc in Clinical Optometry at Cardiff University and is a provider of continuing education for optometrists, including through the Cataract Club workshop programme. Over 18-19 years as a consultant, he has trained approximately 40 registrars and associate specialists.

Professor Muhtaseb maintains his enthusiasm for research and supervises trainee doctors undertaking research. He has published the results of his clinical research widely in the peer-reviewed literature and is a reviewer for many prestigious journals.

He has presented his work to international conference audiences in Europe, Asia and the USA. He has also been an invited speaker at international conferences, including ESCRS and the Evolving Practice in Ophthalmology Middle East Conference. His publication record includes 20+ peer-reviewed publications, 50+ conference presentations/posters, and 1 book chapter, where he shares his experiences in the use of innovative technologies.

He has performed over 7,000 cataract operations to date. His complication rate is among the lowest in the UK – over 75% below the national average, based on data from the National Ophthalmology Database. Independent patient feedback via PHIN shows 99% of patients would recommend him, and 98% felt their needs were fully met. He regularly presents his outcomes and safety data.
