Dr Martin Bevan is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, with his NHS practice at Singleton Hospital and Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health Board. He has been a consultant rheumatologist since 2000 and brings over 25 years of specialist experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of rheumatological conditions. He is a Bupa Platinum-recognised consultant and is recognised by all major insurance companies.

Dr Bevan served as Lead for Rheumatology within his health board for many years and currently holds the position of Group Medical Director at Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Specialist Diagnostic Skills

Dr Bevan has two specialist diagnostic techniques that set him apart in the assessment of complex rheumatological conditions. He is skilled in polarised light microscopy, the gold standard method for confirming a diagnosis of gout by identifying uric acid crystals in joint fluid. He is also trained in videocapillaroscopy, a specialist technique used to examine the small blood vessels at the nail fold to aid diagnosis of connective tissue disorders including scleroderma and other autoimmune conditions.

Training and Appointments

Dr Bevan qualified in Cardiff in 1991 and undertook general medical training in South Wales before becoming a rheumatology registrar in Cardiff in 1995. He received his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Rheumatology in 1999 and was appointed as a Consultant Rheumatologist in 2000.
