Dr Akhila Mallipedhi is a Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, Swansea, with her NHS practice at Hywel Dda University Health Board, where she has been a consultant since 2015. She is Lead Clinician for the Weight Management Service at Hywel Dda, and has specialist expertise in diabetes technology, insulin pump therapy, weight management and general endocrinology.

Weight Management
Dr Mallipedhi is Lead Clinician for the Weight Management Service at Hywel Dda University Health Board, where she works closely with weight management teams and the Welsh Institute of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery. She takes an evidence-based, person-centred and compassion-focused approach to supporting patients with obesity and associated medical conditions, including help with keeping weight off long term, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing the medical conditions that often accompany it.
Dr Mallipedhi offers personalised nutritional support and lifestyle guidance alongside medical and pharmacological treatment, including the prescribing of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) where clinically appropriate. She prescribes weight loss medications responsibly with a focus on safe, sustained and long-term outcomes rather than short-term results.
Training and Qualifications
Dr Mallipedhi qualified in Medicine in India in 2004 and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2009, progressing to Fellow of the College in 2016. She completed a research doctorate (MD) at Swansea University in 2015, focusing on weight management services and metabolic surgery outcomes in collaboration with the Welsh Institute of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery. She has specialised in diabetes and endocrinology since 2015.
Research and Academic Roles
Dr Mallipedhi holds an Honorary Lectureship at Swansea University and has published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers across diabetes, endocrinology and weight management. She mentors medical students from both Swansea and Cardiff Medical Schools and is actively involved in postgraduate training in diabetes and endocrinology within Hywel Dda University Health Board.
