YAG Laser Treatment Swansea | Sancta Maria Hospital
At Sancta Maria Hospital, we offer YAG laser capsulotomy, a fast, painless outpatient procedure to restore clear vision if it has clouded following cataract surgery. Performed by our consultant ophthalmologists, including Dr Gayathri Sreekanth, the treatment typically takes just a few minutes and requires no incision.
YAG stands for yttrium aluminium garnet, the crystal used as the “lasing medium” inside the laser. In ophthalmology, a YAG laser is most commonly used to perform a posterior capsulotomy: a quick procedure that treats posterior capsule opacification (PCO), a common complication that can develop months or years after cataract surgery.
PCO, sometimes called a “secondary cataract” or “after-cataract,” happens when the thin membrane holding your intraocular lens (IOL) in place gradually thickens and clouds. It isn’t a return of the original cataract, but it produces similar symptoms: blurred or hazy vision, glare or halos around lights, and a general dulling of contrast and colour.
PCO is common. Clinical studies show incidence rates vary considerably depending on lens type and follow-up period, with some patients affected within a year of surgery and rates increasing over the following three to five years. It’s one of the most frequently seen complications of cataract surgery, and YAG laser capsulotomy is the standard, highly effective treatment for it.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is virtually painless.
Before treatment
Your consultant will examine your eye and confirm that PCO is the cause of your symptoms. Eye drops are used to dilate the pupil, and an anaesthetic drop numbs the surface of the eye so you feel no discomfort during the procedure.
During treatment
You’ll sit at a slit-lamp style machine, similar to the one used in a routine eye examination, fitted with a laser. A special contact lens allows your consultant to view the clouded capsule clearly. The laser is then used to create a small opening in the centre of the capsule, clearing the visual axis and allowing light to pass through properly again. The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes.
After treatment
You may be asked to wait briefly so your consultant can check your eye pressure. Most patients notice an improvement in vision within a day, and you can typically resume normal activities almost immediately, though your consultant will confirm what’s right for you.
Please note: After YAG laser treatment, your vision may be temporarily blurred due to dilating eye drops and the laser procedure itself. You may also experience light sensitivity, glare, or floaters, which can interfere with safe driving. Because of these effects, driving immediately after the procedure is unsafe, and you should arrange alternative transport home. Most patients return to driving 24 – 48 hours post procedure.
Our YAG laser treatment is delivered by experienced consultant ophthalmologists who combine high-volume NHS surgical experience with the personalised attention of private care.
