What is an MRI scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce incredibly detailed images of various parts of your body.

An MRI scanner is a large tube containing powerful magnets, the area being scanned will always be in the centre of the scanner.

An MRI scan can be used to examine almost any part of the body and results of your scan can be used to help diagnose conditions, plan treatments and assess how effective a previous treatment has been.

How do I prepare for an MRI scan?

You will be sent an appointment letter. This letter will tell you exactly what you will need to do before you arrive. In your appointment letter you will also receive a MRI safety form which you will need to fill in before your scan.

In most instances you can eat and drink as normal, but some scans will require you to not eat or drink for a period beforehand. This would be advised in your appointment letter

If you have any questions about any aspect of the scan, please ask. It’s important to us that you are perfectly comfortable and understand everything before your scan starts.

What happens during an MRI scan?

The MRI scanner is operated by a radiographer, who will explain everything to you and answer any questions you may have.

The scanner makes very loud tapping or buzzing noises. This is normal and part of how the MRI scanner works. You will be given a call bell, for any reason you need the radiographers you squeeze the call bell, they will stop the scan and attend to you immediately. It’s very important to keep as still as possible during your MRI scan.

MRI scans can take between 15 to 90 minutes.

For some MRI scans, an injection of a clear contrast dye maybe required. Contrast dye is used to highlights some structures more clearly. It will depend on the area being scanned and what we need to see. You will be told beforehand if an injection will be required and you can discuss any concerns you have before the scan starts.

How long will it take to get the results of my MRI scan?

The images will be read by a Consultant Radiologist, a report will be issued and send back to the referrer. This will take a maximum of 7 days.

Any reports will go back via email or post directly to your GP.

We can share results with another hospital or clinic via the Image Exchange Portal (IEP), if you would like us to do this please email: xray@hmtsanctamaria.org

If once you have been given the results from your referrer, eg GP or Consultant, you would like your own Health Portal with access to your images and report, please complete a Subject Access Request (SAR) form and we will be able to initiate this for you.

How do I book an MRI scan?

To book an MRI scan we will first need a referral letter from a GP or consultant. MRI referrals can also be sent directly to xray@hmtsanctamaria.org. Once we have your referral letter we will contact you to make an appointment.
