Physiotherapy
The Sancta Maria physiotherapy team comprises of skilled, Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered, chartered physiotherapists.
They are skilled in pre-operative physiotherapy and post-operative rehabilitation, working with patients to achieve the best outcomes. Physiotherapy aims to facilitate restoration of normal patterns and functionality via expert examination and use of therapeutic techniques. Each person will have a detailed assessment followed by the provision of an individualised specific treatment regime to promote their return to function and achievement of their identified treatment goals. Treatments are developed to promote recovery and to aid prevention of recurrence or future injury. Pre and post-operative physiotherapy is included within the price of joint replacement procedures and many other orthopaedic surgeries. More information will be provided prior to booking.
Pre-Operative Physiotherapy
Prior to your surgery, you will have a thorough assessment with a physiotherapist to measure mobility and strength. Some issues can slow down your post-operative recovery so getting your body into the best condition possible prior to surgery can help you to recover quicker. A physiotherapist will also discuss your personal situation including whether you have stairs and rails in your home so they can facilitate your safe journey home after your procedure. They will offer advice for the post-operative phase on areas including getting in and out of bed safely as well as discussing any concerns you may have.
Post-Operative Physiotherapy
Once your consultant has undertaken your specialist surgery many people will require a structured rehabilitation programme to promote post-operative success. Your physiotherapist will work closely with you to promote your optimal recovery. You may be given exercises to prevent possible complications such as chest infections, deep vein thrombosis and swelling together with specific exercises to encourage joint range of motion and muscle conditioning and strengthening where appropriate. Following discharge from hospital your physiotherapist will arrange for you to have further outpatient treatment sessions as required to monitor and promote your continue recovery.
Outpatient Physiotherapy
Sancta Maria also specialises in outpatient physiotherapy for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Sessions are on a one to one therapist to patient basis, and the initial assessment is 45 minutes and follow up appointments 30 minutes. One of our experienced team of physiotherapists will assess you and provide a treatment plan. Some common conditions which are covered include:
- Joint problems including osteoarthritis
- Spinal problems including back pain, sciatica, neck pain.
- Soft tissue conditions
